Lawn Drainage Solutions
Lawn Drainage Solutions – As you can see in the photos attached, our client’s landscaper cut a lot of soil material from the rear yard to create a level lawn. Judging from the photos, we estimate around 1500mm of soil has been cut.
In doing so, the landscaper removed all the good soil and basically laid the new Sir Walter Buffalo turf on top of a clay base.
Fast forward 2 years, the Sir Walter Buffalo has never been a healthy green colour since being installed.
Why? The Buffalo has never been able to establish a good root system as the soil underlay is quite thin and underneath is predominantly clay. Consequently, the lawn has never thrived due to:
- poor and thin soil layer
- clay base
- poor drainage
- excess moisture in soil, incidentally, this is evident with lots of earthworm activity – for more info refer to https://lawngreen.com.au/earthworm-mounds-and-damage-to-lawns-lawngreen-solutions-tips/
- rain events, with nil lawn watering by client, nil drainage and the ground under foot is soggy at best
What practical things (Lawn Drainage Solutions) can be done to help alleviate the poor drainage situation:
- Lawn Core Aeration and remove soil cores before introducing river sand
- Top dress with 100% River Sand to improve soil / clay porosity and fill core holes with river sand
- High applications of Gypsum (claybreaker products) to lawn areas to improve the soil structure – around 1 to 2 kg per square metre
- Application of Soil Penetrant products like MP TeraFirm Soil Penetrant
- Turn off all lawn irrigation especially from April to October (in Sydney NSW area)
- If cost effective, install sub-surface drainage (ag lines) to help water runoff
- Generally gypsum (claybreaker) is best cultivated and turned through clay soils before laying turf and before adding turf underlay. However, if you have an existing lawn that is suffering from compaction, using gypsum will also help relieve compaction in most clay or heavy soils. First aerate the lawn, then spread 2 kg per m2 of gypsum over the lawn and rake in. If you’re unable to aerate the lawn first, water the gypsum in heavily once spread.
Getting excess moisture out of the root zone requires good water management, accepted physical maintenance practices and quite often the use of a good soil penetrant.
