Lawn Watering Tip Heavy But Infrequent Watering

Lawn Watering Tip – Our precious dam levels (here in Sydney NSW) are just about full again, however, this does not mean you can water your lawn willy-nilly.

Heavy but infrequent waterings promote deep root growth making your warm season grasses drought tolerant.

In terms of a lawn watering program for your warm season grasses (including zoysia, couch, kikuyu and buffalo) do as follows:
  • heavy but infrequent watering – always 1 hour waterings
  • every week in Summer or twice weekly when real hot and dry
  • every 2 weeks in Spring & Autumn
  • NIL watering in Winter

Your lawn will love you if you do as we tell you!!

No water at all over winter (as I always say), otherwise if it does not rain then every 2 weeks in Spring and Autumn and once or twice a week in Summer. Always water for 1 hour.

The key here is heavy but infrequent watering.

There is enough water in the soil to carry the lawn through to late Spring, so turn the lawn irrigation sprinklers OFF for Winter. Also, remember that the lawn is different to your garden plants. Lawns (especially warm season grasses) only require Heavy But Infrequent Watering, that is, 1 hour watering every week in Summer, fortnightly in Spring & Autumn and NIL in Winter.
