Buffalo Lawn Care Protocol – Weed Free Lawns

Buffalo Lawn Care Protocol – We started work on this Buffalo Lawn (Stenotaphrum secundatum) in Glenhaven (N/W suburb of Sydney NSW) around October last year.

Buffalo Lawn Care - Getting The Best Out Of Your Buffalo Grass.

Initially, we were faced with a struggling buffalo lawn that was infested with lots of weeds and bare patches.

After the initial Tender Loving Care the lawn has bounced back to being a thriving, thick, dense and very healthy Buffalo Lawn.

Not sure what variety of Buffalo it is, however, after test spraying the Buffalo in the initial treatment we found nil damage to the lawn. This tells us it is one of the reliable Aussie Buffalo varieties like Sir Walter, Sapphire, Kings Pride, Matilda etc, and not one of the American ST varieties.

Re-capping the LawnGreen protocol when dealing with a new customer’s Buffalo: There are around 10 different Aussie Buffalo grass varieties sold in Australia and I cannot find fault with any of them. However, it’s a different story with the American ST Buffalo varieties introduced back in the 80s. The ST varieties, including ST26, ST85 and ST91, are all notorious for not tolerating broadleaf weed herbicides registered for use on Buffalo. So, as a precaution, we always test spray any new customer’s buffalo lawn. And as always, you’re in safe hands!

Some Lawn Care tips for Buffalo Grass include:

1. Mow your lawn regularly ie every week in Summer around 30mm high, every 2 weeks Spring and Autumn and every 3 weeks in Winter

2. Water your lawn every week (for 1 hour) in Summer (if no rain), and NIL water in Winter

3. Fertilise with a well balanced granular fertiliser

4. Only mow one third of the grass leaf at each mowing
