A Lawn Green client contacted the office with a pretty severe lawn fungal disease situation. We shared the photos below and after discussion with our turf consultant and lawn care product supplier we have come up with a solution that is practical and cost effective.
The client’s photos are as follows:
The third photo is the same area next to lawn water tap, however, the mushrooms have been cleared away leaving the black residue.
The fourth photo is the same as the first (but larger) to help clarity.
The client provided us with the following information:
“Dear Gerry & team,
After the recent storms and heavy rain I’ve noticed a massive growth of mushrooms on the eastern side of our back yard, likely due to soil moisture.
I’ve cleared most of the mushrooms ands noticed the grass being brown in colour, still quite damp (the rest of the lawn has dried up)…”
After discussion with industry colleagues we have summarised our findings as follows:
- The lawn area affected by the disease is around 5 square metres.
- The lawn disease can not be identified without doing expert lawn disease tests. However, to engage acompany to carry these out would cost around two to three hundred dollars.
- If we were to take a guess on the lawn disease we could apply a fungicide product which is quite expensive and not guaranteed to give the desired result.
- This leaves us with the only option that will give us a guaranteed result, that is, we replace that section of lawn with new soil and new turf rolls (matching the existing Sir Walter Buffalo turf).
- It is very important to dispose of the cut lawn and soil into the Green Waste Bin to prevent the spread of fungal disease.
- Nil lawn watering from April to October (in Sydney NSW)
