Lawn Watering – I got a call from a client in St Ives , Sydney – he loves his lawn but is annoyed that it is looking like crap.
I asked him to send me some photos before I rushed out to see what the problem was.
Anyway, as soon as I saw the photos, it became apparent what the problem was and how to rectify it.
I asked Rick (because that’s his real name) if he was watering his lawn over winter.
He answered yes to that. Then I asked him how often. He answered every week to that. Then I asked him for how long each time. He answered 1 hour to that.
Therein lies the problem, he is killing the lawn with kindness.
By watering the lawn every week in Winter, for one hour, the soil becomes waterlogged and oxygen deprived making it tough for the grass to survive.
As you can see in the photo, the grass is dying as a result of the excess watering.
Our advice is to TURN THE LAWN WATER OFF IN WINTER, and let the prevailing rainfall take care of the watering over winter. Any Winter rain will be sufficient to keep the lawn soil moist from April through to October.
As we always say, what your lawn needs is Heavy But Infrequent Watering!
Heavy but infrequent waterings promote deep root growth making your warm season grasses drought tolerant.
In terms of a watering program for your warm season grasses (including zoysia, couch, kikuyu and buffalo) do as follows:
- heavy but infrequent watering – always 1 hour waterings
- every week in Summer or twice weekly when real hot and dry
- every 2 weeks in Spring & Autumn
- NIL watering in Winter
